What do I need for my pet bearded dragon?
You want a bearded dragon and want to make sure it is receives proper care.
To do this you must have everything needed before you bring your new pet home.
Below is a short listing all the items to keep your new bearded dragon happy and healthy.
Habitat
A large aquarium or terrarium with a screened top. Get as big a cage as possible, a 40 gal. breeder
is the most common. I house my breeders in custom 4x2x2 enclosures.
A Spot lamp for basking the tighter the beam the better, I use zoo med bulbs.
A UVB fluorescent bulb. The BEST choice is the ZooMed Reptisun 10.0 fluorescent bulb, these
are all I'll use, remember to replace these every 6 months.
An under tank heat pad or a ceramic heat emitter, i use ceramic because of tank configurations.
Substrate for the bottom of the tank, there's a lot of controvercy on this. I use sand for
my adults and paper towel for the babies.
A hiding area for your bearded dragon. I use hollow logs for this.
Rocks, branches, or logs for climbing and basking.
Food bowl, smooth insect bowl, and a water dish.
Any additional decorations, backgrounds, or artifical plants to make the habitat look more
natural.
Insects, Vegetables and Supplements
Crickets, mealworms or superworms that have been gut loaded. NO MICE! It's really not good
for them.
Frozen mixed vegetables: beans, carrots, peas.
Fresh vegetables: mustard, collared, dandelion greens, or kale.
Calcium and vitamin D3 supplement powder.
That should get you started, there are a large number of care sheets
available on the web, check out beardeddragon.org for some other great
